"Wash Away Those Years"
(performed by Creed, written by Mark Tremonti and Scott Stapp)
She came calling
One early morning
She showed her crown of thorns
She whispered softly
To tell a story
About how she had been wronged
As she lay lifeless
He stole her innocence
And this is how she carried on
This is how she carried on
Well I guess she closed her eyes
And just imagined everything's alright
But she could not hide her tears
'Cause they were sent to wash away those years
They were sent to wash away those years
My anger's violent
But still I'm silent
When tragedy strikes at home
I know this decadence Is shared by millions
Remember you're not alone
Remember you're not alone
Well if you just close your eyes
And just imagine everything's alright
But do not hide your tears
'Cause they were sent to wash away those years
Well if you just close your eyes
And just imagine everything's alright
But do not hide your tears 'Cause they were sent to wash away those years
They were sent to wash away those years
Maybe we can wash away those years
For we have crossed many oceans
And we labor in between
In life there are many quotients
And I hope I find the mean
the mean, the mean
Well if you just close your eyes
And just imagine everything's alright
But do not hide your tears
'Cause they were sent to wash away those years
Well if you just close your eyes
And just imagine everything's alright
But do not hide your tears
'Cause they were sent to wash away those years
Maybe we can wash away those years
I hope that you can wash away those years

I have been listening to this song during the past few days. I don't know what made me dig this old CD out, but I did and have been playing mostly just this song.
It begins with a single haunting guitar. Then, Scott Stapp's powerful voice enters, singing the first verse a cappella style.
I imagine the story that the girl tells is about some type of sexual abuse...incest. Needless to say, this song speaks to me in many levels. He certainly stole my innocence. For me, I think listening to the song is a way of "safely" remembering. After the first verse, the heavy rock drums and guitars come in, and I get lost in the angry beats. My own anger rises with the music and, like the lyrics say, I remember that I am not alone.
Sometimes I cry during the song, and the tears feel cleansing. This is what I want today - cleansing tears to wash away those dirty, disgusting years. I want them gone...disappeared. I want him gone...disappeared.
But today I feel like stone, and the tears will not break through. In the absence of tears, I want to cut...hurt...punish. I don't know why I need to feel this, but I want these horrible, destructive feelings gone too! I want the memories gone. I want to stop hating myself. I want to stop hurting so much all the time!
Oh my God! This is why people kill themselves!
I have great hope that you and your therapist can use EMDR for your healing. You do not deserve what is happening.
